Faculty and Staff

The New School is offering paid family leave as of January 1, 2018, under New York State’s Paid Family Leave program.  Funded by employee payroll deductions, it provides eligible employees who work in New York State, including those represented by a union, with paid leave to:

  • Bond with a newly born, adopted, or fostered child
  • Care for a family member with a serious health condition (including spouse, domestic partner, child, stepchild, parent, parent in-law, stepparent, grandparent and grandchild)
  • Assist loved ones when a family member is called into active military duty overseas

All eligible employees are required to participate in PFL. The University will begin collecting the payroll deductions on January 1.  The deduction will be equal to 0.126% of an employee’s weekly wage, capped at the current NY State average weekly wage of $1,305.92.  This equates to a maximum employee contribution of approximately $1.65 per week or $85.60 per year for 2018.

Undergraduate and graduate students are covered during pregnancy from discrimination under Title IX. All students have the option to take a medical leave of absence, if need be for a complicated pregnancy or childbirth, and PhD students can consider using their Maintenance of Status as a parental leave.
