The Caregiver Support Working Group is a subcommittee of the Social Justice Committee that is made up of students, staff, and faculty members at The New School who are interested in advocating on behalf of the many caregivers in our community.
Since we began in March 2014, we have advocated for:
- The successful installation of lactation booths and changing tables throughout campus.
- The successful preservation of 15 annual “carry over” leave days for staff members of TNS, in addition to the ability to bank up to 22 for FMLA-related reasons.
In Spring 2015, we circulated a campus-wide survey to gather qualitative and quantitative data on the work-life balance of students, faculty and staff at The New School, especially those who are also caregivers. The survey was designed as a tool for us to assess our community’s needs and the aggregate data will be used to inform a proposal to the university for potential support, facilities and policy changes for caregivers. We are currently analyzing and organizing the information collected.
With the support of the Social Justice Initiative, we are currently discussing the possibility of launching a childcare listserv to better link caregivers who are in need of support with other community members who may be able to nanny or babysit.
